Q: What is Sisters in Tech?
A: Sisters in Tech is a foundational programme helping Māori and Pacific wāhine gain employment in the tech sector. It provides a unique opportunity for a cohort of talented wāhine to step into a career in New Zealand’s fast growing and highly paid tech community.
Q: Who is the Sisters in Tech programme for?
A: Sisters in Tech is for companies supporting diversity and helping make a difference by providing opportunities. Sisters in Tech is a foundational programme helping Māori and Pacific wāhine gain employment in the tech sector.
Q: Why Sisters in Tech?
A: We know there is a tech job to suit everyone. As the demand for digital skills remains high, we need to ensure Māori and Pacific women are supported in pursuing tech careers. Recent research shows that less than three percent of the tech workforce are Pacific people and just four percent are Māori. Meanwhile, only 27 percent of the tech sector are female.
Q: What type of roles are the candidates suitable for?
A: Placements include entry level roles in digital, back office, IT help desk, IT Business support, and digital marketing. Previous candidates have also progressed to sales, programming and web design.
Q: Who can participate?
A: Potential candidates will be assessed by our recruitment team before selections are confirmed. Successful candidates are recognised as having attributes suitable for ongoing employment within the tech sector.
Q: How does the job placement work?
A: Successful candidates will be engaged in intensive training for three months prior to commencing their role. The programme is tailored to the individual needs of each candidate. To help facilitate successful onboarding, candidates will also receive a further six months of wrap-around personal, cultural and professional support. This includes advising participating companies on appropriate cultural awareness.

Q: I’m not in Auckland or Northland, can I still be involved?
A: At this stage we’re only offering the programme in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland and Te Tai Tokerau Northland. We aim to include additional regions in the future.
Q: Who is behind Sisters in Tech?
A: Sisters in Tech is a Government and industry collaboration. It is a partnership between the Ministry of Social Development (MSD), Microsoft and NZTech.
